I was going to update my portfolio site again soon with this stuff anyway so I'll put it here too. I thought I'd show off a bit of the stuff I've been working on in INDIANA JONES: ADVENTURE WORLD.
This is one of the images used in the loading screen when going into a map. I THINK this was for Mystery of the Moondoor. I can't remember right now. This particular piece might be my favorite thing I've done at work. In a lot of ways it's really simple- the focus is in the middle and it's a different color (complimentary color, nonetheless) from everything else AND it's the brightest area, but I think it came off without being cheesy. These take about 5-8 hours, I'd say.

I'm going to be sending it out to publishers and apparently they like to see some finished art so they know what the end product will be like, but they prefer most of it to be sketches because otherwise you look inflexible.

This is the second draft of the Starfleet uniform that I made for Halloween. It's not the best photo- I'm bending forward and covering up any of the details, but I'm pretty happy with the job I did. When I finally do the finished version it'll have rank braids (lieutenant). I had to alter the pattern I had pretty drastically. The one you get from Roddenberry.com is apparently made for people who are five feet tall and have exceptionally short arms.

I don't have as much time to draw right now because my time is filled up with drawing, but I still have my very short subway ride, waiting in line for coffee in the morning, and when it's someone else's turn on game night. Both of these are actually between-turns-on-game-night sketches.

Painting Parker, part 1

I've started painting a statue of Darwyn Cooke's Parker by my friend Jesse Farrell. Apparently it was painted once and he wasn't happy with it and asked if I wanted to take a crack at it. When I saw it, I couldn't say no. I plan on doing a pretty minimal color treatment on this guy since the comics themselves are pretty minimal. Scroll down to the bottom and you can see stage one- many many thin washes of black acrylic and ink to get the base color down.

This past Saturday Ming was doing a book signing at Hub Comics for Tantalize. She was also doing head sketches for $10, so I asked her for a "sexy Guy Gardner". Ming wanted me to point out her pun whenever I show this to people- you WILL be mine- because his powers are based on will. Ahahaha. Anyway, Ming refused my $10 and said that in return she would like a Sexy Bruce Wayne shirtless and feeding a baby bat with an eyedropper. So, when that little gem is finished and makes it's way up on the site you'll know that I didn't just go completely insane with all of the sexy JLI heroes.

THIS is what I've been working into the wee hours of the night for the past couple of months for. The environments for this first batch of Indiana Jones maps are 98% me so I'm pretty proud and at the same time never want to look at those files again. I made a good percentage of the stuff on those maps too, but somehow I feel that is less impressive. I am very proud of those corpses in the last screenshot.

On this Monday's drink and draw I did a little doodle of Booster doing the dishes for my friend Izzy who loves all things Booster Gold. It spiraled into me doing a doodle of Blue Beetle cleaning the Bug (his hovercraft plane thingy) in short shorts and another of Guy Gardner dusting. I don't know if this was the result of the cider, or the Justice League International trades in front of us, or that-time-of-the-month hormones or maybe a fateful combination of all three but we knew we were onto something AMAZING.

I'm thinking 2013 needs a Justice League b-list heros doing household chores pinup calendar and I think America agrees with me. A few people have said to me that we need this now more than ever after the outrage over the sexism in the new 52. It still needs work- I threw this together pretty fast tonight- but it is the first step down a glorious path.

We were also talking about how great the old Marvel swimsuit issues were. That might have inspired it a bit too. Look up the page where Punisher is modelling a swimsuit. PURE GOLD.

I've been digging through patterns to find things I can alter to make these dresses. The Kraven one should be fairly easy. It's just a little cap sleeve dress with a faux fur trimmed hood. The cat on the front will be a bitch though.

The Roaring Twenties

I find the history of fashion to be pretty interesting. I enjoy following the way that styles change to reflect the values of different eras. This is the first in a small series I plan on doing about fashions from the past 1.5 to 2 centuries.

Super quick note: In the twenties as the women's rights movement grew, younger women began to discard the constricting garments of yesteryear and embrace a more straight-line and flowing silhouette. So, when the feminine form enhancing corset was out, women instead took to the opposite extreme and a very thin, boyish figure came into vogue. Hemlines and hairstyles became shorter, and trousers were brought into the wardrobe- we can thank Coco Chanel for spearheading those initiatives.

Although I still feel like I should go back into that piece and change her shoes. While the style is mostly correct the marabou trim is much more of a 50's thing. Think Marilyn Monroe.

In case you're wondering, this weekend I acquired the new Drew Struzan art book (Hub Comics), and Charlie Harper: An Illustrated Life, 100 Dresses: The Costume Institute: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and 100 Shoes: The Costume Institute: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Porter Square Books). They're all great, except that I wish the Struzan book showed more of his process. It's all finished pieces. The Harper Book is pretty amazing though. Not a lot of sketches, but he's more about breaking things down to basic shapes anyway.

I also got Wonder Woman number 2. Loving it!

Man. I haven't used these markers in so long I wasn't sure if they would still work. Most of the ones in my big drawers of markers are from high school but they're still going strong! In case you were wondering what kind they are, they're Prismacolors with a couple of Copics mixed in (literally, two copic markers).

This is just a photo I took with my new camera. So much nicer than the old camera. I still need a little light kit, but it's not too shabby so far. Also, check out that AWESOME eggplant in the front there. I had to have it.

American Gods. Finished.

As I said yesterday, this piece is part of a collection of works based on Neil Gaiman's American Gods. The rest can be seen over at Super Punch.

This piece took forever because my first ideas were all too extreme. They more or less involved a nude woman with nethers that were a gaping fang filled maw (think sarlacc pit) and she's resting on a bed/pedestal that's slightly out of reach of a horde of people that are struggling to reach her as she looks down on them with scorn. It just didn't seem very "all ages".

For the linework in this piece I used a Japanese drawing program called SAI. The color was still done in photoshop, but the line quality in SAI is astounding. I suggest you all go and try it out. I started using at work this week and trying to draw clean lines in photoshop again is just painful.

This year's MICE (Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo) was great! I wanted to say thanks to everyone who stopped by my table and showed their support. This was only the second year for this show and it was amazing to see the crowd density stay the same after the space increased by 2-3 times. Also I wanted to thank the Boston Comics Roundtable for putting this together again.

On an unrelated topic- below is the first thing I drew in my sketchbook after arriving in SF. At the top is me on the airplane with one of the many, many babies and toddlers I was surrounded by. I woke up before 5 that morning eastern time got on the plane, got to the hotel and then went to work and didn't get back home until 10PM pacific time which lead to the next drawing- falling asleep in the tub for two hours after emptying the tiny bubble bath bottle. So yes, those are tiny toiletries, not pills.

Lady days are important when you work in video games. Every so often you have to be in a room that doesn't have thirty dudes talking about their views on Blizzard. It's worse when those thirty dudes are pretty much the only people in town that you know. Not that I don't like them, but there's only so much time I can spend with the same people and I already see them more than 40 hours a week.

Accompanying me here is Emily Lubanko, who we only hired about a month ago but it's been a delightful month full of girly giggling and deep, meaningful discussions over whether Wolverine or Batman is hotter.

Here we are at Isotope. In the back is our friend Kai who we just found out was in the area. I just didn't feel like including him in the comic because it would have diminished the lady-ness of it. I could have tossed in something about us picking up a sexy dude but I guess that would have been lying.

We spent our nights at the glamorous W Hotel where I had to sleep with a t-shirt on my head to keep from getting pink hair dye all over their white, designer EVERYTHING. The last thing I wanted was to see a bill for all of pillows that are made specifically for them because I turned them pink forever. At home, my method for getting around this problem is "I don't care. Why are you even looking in my bedroom in the first place?"

WHAT WHAT. I think you should all PLAY ADVENTURE WORLD. It's been my life for the past year and now I can FRICKIN TELL PEOPLE WHAT I'VE BEEN DOING. We put all of this together with an exceptionally small art team and I'm pretty damn proud of how it turned out. At the very least watch the trailer.

This is the t-shirt I designed for the launch- it went out to all of Zynga so there a little over 2000 of these printed. Glory in the shitty phone photo. Tomorrow you can see the team shirt! There are only 30-something of those!

I finally got the work scanner back to my hotel room with the proper cables and adapters and everything. I started on this piece for Bristolwhip. Now if I can only locate a scanner while I'm on the West Coast I can post a LOT more stuff.

A couple of days ago I left for San Fran to work 12+ hour days for two weeks. On the one hand it's already straining, but on the other hand I think it has me wanting to do my own work more. Sure, I'm tired, but I feel more obligated to take some of that time back and do something.

I've begun illustrations for a children's book while I do the layouts for the bestiary. I want to play with colors a bit more in this. It provides an opportunity to have a bit of fun with the art.

This poor elephant shrew has dreams of grandeur. Drawn in Flash! I think after 6 months at Conduit Labs and now a year at Zynga I can draw more quickly and confidently in Flash than Photoshop, that being said, it's still Flash and Flash can kiss my ass.

I started this sketch on the train ride from hell (maybe I'll talk about that later in the week when I've had time to not think about it for a bit). At the moment it feels a little predictable. The idea behind Neil Gaiman's American Gods was described to me recently and it's something that I've thought about for a bit so I wanted to flesh out some of these new gods. I might do a small series of them.
