Since we were directly under the fire, we got all of the water that leaked down from the third floor. There was a good amount of time spent switching out pots and pans and pouring the black, ashy sludge mixed with burnt insulation into the bathtub and toilet.
The firemen said that while the fire did burn through the ceiling of the third floor, it did not penetrate the roof. We hoped that this meant that we could stay there. However, with the amount of liquid that was coming down, the safety inspector decided that all of the utilities had to be shut off thus making the apartment legally uninhabitable. Luckily, we know someone who lives four blocks from us.
