I guess it starts with our upstairs neighbor (three story house, three apartments, I was on the second floor) knocking on our door at 4:30 in the morning informing us that his ceiling is on fire. Here's me standing outside in the cold, after having been woken up, holding a ferret and my laptop.

You still have a house -- it didn't get burned down, or any fire damage, right? You're safe enough to write, very good.

Now, from what I understand, if the fire department got there pretty quickly your apartment wouldn't have burned up, being that fire tends to spread in an upwards direction (until burning bits of house start falling down). However, water definitely drains downward, and smoke goes everywhere so I'm guessing there's a lot of water damage and everything that wasn't destroyed by the water reeks of smoke.
At least you and the ferret are safe, and the computer is a major save, but it's pretty tragic to lose your own original artwork like that.
Geez louise... I hope you were able to recover most of your stuff...
I'm glad you made it.
I had a fire in my house a few years ago. Scary, and I hope you and your stuff are all safe now, and that the Red Cross helped you out (as they did me).
Bravo for saving the ferrets! Your illustration combines your best elements of humor, honesty, and self expression.

Glad you're okay, and like your priorities.
But were you embarrassed "having been woken up holding a ferret and a laptop"? What will your neighbor think you were doing?
HAH. I just added in another comma. My sentence is fixed.
The laptop was actually in the bed with me because I had fallen asleep working on Guilded Age. The ferret lives in the foyer, which is between the bedroom and the door, but I would have gone for the little monster anyway.
I do hope tat you are well and have a place to stay.
Man that sucks. Hope nothing was too damaged beyond repair or recognition! (I believe smoke damage can be quite bad if it lingers long enough.)
Give us an update! How are you doing?
Eben
