Update on Deep One

I decided to do a clearer image of what the creature would look like before moving on to the body. It's pretty much the same, but I decided to take the stylized arms in the last sketch and turn them into fins. They're basically the underwater equivalent of batwings, with little claws on the ends, or if you prefer, they're like the wings on the Laputa robots. I've started making the body and painting it. The paint job is nowhere near done, and it's still missing a leg, but all in all I'm pretty happy.

It has a twisted wire armature. The torso is done in Sculpy and covered in Model Magic, the limbs are entirely Model Magic. I wanted to work with the crackliness that the head has and make it part of the monster's skin. The webbing between his toes is made from green printing on grocery bags. I hot glued the plastic to thin Scuply claws and then covered them with model magic to hide the rough edges and glue. When it's finished, select parts of it will be glazed to make it look wet.

He is in this pose because he is going to be climbing up the side of a ship, he is not dancing.

I dig the shit out of your character sketch here. Hellboy would not be out of place putting a stomping on it.

I like the design. It's how I pictures a deep one.

Ah, we have a veritable Randolph Carter here. Kep your eyes open for inexplicable pacific earthquakes.

P.S. Wings in Laputa? I thought those were just sheathy (word?) extendable arms.

@dan nugent

yes, it does look very much like something Mike Mignola would do.

Are you familiar with the concept sketches for "Shadow Over Innsmouth" done by Bernie Wrightson? Charles Band (of Full Moon Entertainment) was going to produce a film version of the Lovecraft story, but the production company collapsed during pre-production. Hope Wrightson was paid for his work, as Charles Band has a habit of screwing his artists and writers...
